“Hello. My name is Karla and I have an inability to accept help.” “Hi Karla.”
This was me not so long ago. Like many of us, I had a really hard time accepting help. And asking for help?! Sweet Susan, I would rather shovel my driveway with a toothpick. Call it stubbornness, call it pride, call it conceit – regardless, it was madness. I like to think of myself as a good friend, one who often goes very much out of their way to offer help to those that I care about and yet, when my loving pals would offer to help me in any way I immediately put up a wall and my inner dialogue became ‘I have to try harder because they obviously don’t think I am capable.’ Complete madness.
About a year ago I decided to put myself into ‘recovery’ and began to accept every ounce of help thrown my way…and let me tell you, friend – help is AMAZING!
This is also likely my greatest business lesson to date. Without accepting help, businesses will fail. No one can do everything themselves…sadly, not even me (just don’t tell my kids – they still believe I am a magical unicorn). Recently, one of my besties offered to help me with my website. I have owned marketmade.ca for about four years and had great plans to teach myself how to build it, but a million other things happened and it just sat and sat and sat… UNTIL I said “YES” to help and viola! It now exists.
So if anyone wants to offer me help cleaning my closets, writing a Pulitzer novel, meeting/marrying Bruce Springsteen or putting the lids on all my kid’s markers, the answer is “YES, YES, obviously YES and YES!” And if I can help you, please don’t hesitate to simply ask 🙂
